武光誠先生の「日本人なら〜」シリーズ、今度は「仏教」である。こでまでの「神道」や「日本神話」などにくらべると、よい入門書はすでにたくさんある分野なので（ひろさちや氏や白取春彦氏の著作、岩波ジュニア新書の『仏教入門』、最近よかったのは日本文化としての仏教を前面に出してきたナツメ社の『図解雑学Ｑ＆Ａやさしくわかる仏教』…）、さすがに新規参入はきびしいのではないか、と思ったが、なかなかの独自性を発揮している本である。
やはり、月並みだが〈わかりやすさ〉が最大の「売り」だろうか。武光先生の得意技であるすごい明快な、そしてかゆいところにまで手のとどく解説で、これまで漠然としていた所がスパッと理解できた。コンパクトな説明をすらすら読み通すことができるのに、けれど情報量はたっぷりで、しっかり知識を得られた気分になる。
話題の広げ方も、新書としてはオリジナルなやり方である。釈尊（ブッダ）の人生と教え、その歴史的な展開（特に日本の宗派的な流れ）は基本として、その他、仏像概説や、日本人の慣習としての仏教（合掌、寺の鐘、お葬式）にも一章が設けられている。だけでなく、仏教に特徴的な「死後」観、禅の清貧なライフスタイル、仏教のやや異端的な密教のマジカルワールドを、それぞれ章ごとにまとめて解説している。視点のしぼり方がはっきりしていて、とても学びやすかった。
