　平将門は平安時代・朝廷への反乱者。東北の出身であるのになぜか東京の人間は彼のことを東京の守護神と疑わないらしい。そして伝説も当時の武蔵野、後の江戸─東京の地に彼の斬られた首が飛んだと、その地に帰って来たのだと何故か伝える。首塚は今も厳然とした祟りと供に、その存在感を薄れさせない。

　将門伝説の中に残る『花園妙見』、童子の形をしたという守護神はまた裏切れば祟りをなすといわれる仏教・菩薩の一形態。一度彼の守護となりながら、その後どういうわけかその敵対者の側の守護となるという、裏切りともいえるようなその伝説はひょっとしてなにかを暗示しているのではないか。

　将門が東京の守護神というのなら、そうなるように仕掛けた現実の担い手は誰か。
　それは一体なんのためであったのかを彼に絡んだ寺や神社の史跡、伝説や生地から少しずつ煮詰めていく。まだわからないところも残して本は終わる。この本のテーマは「大江戸魔方陣」「東京魔方陣」に引き継がれて、彼女は今もまだそれを調べ続けているようだ。

　作者はホラー・伝奇作家の加門七海。「帝都物語」で火がついた「平将門ブーム」。その当時には平将門の史跡めぐりなどもはやったそうですが…地方人の私は、その後何年も経ってからようやく首塚だけ訪れることができました。作者の加門氏は東京生まれ・東京育ちにも関わらず、首塚に行ったのはこの本の取材のために訪れたのが初めてだったそうです。
　さて、この本ですが、平将門は東京及びその近郊にたくさんの神社仏閣で祀られているが、果たして本当に「東京の地霊」として祀られ、機能しているのか…を調べまわったフィールドワーク本です。ドキュメントチックな語り口調なので読みやすい。
　そうして、東京都下の将門関連の神社仏閣をつないでゆくと…すごいことに！　推理小説のようにドキドキします。本当に。
　寺院と違い、神社は「土地」に建てられるもの。かつての「聖地」などの特別な地、「気」を孕む土地に建てられるものです。近代都市の代名詞でもある「東京」に重ねられた、今までとは全く違う「東京」と云う街が浮かび上がってくるのです。それは江戸から、いえ、それ以前からこの東の地を治めようとしてきた者達の爪あと。
　同シリーズとして河出書房新社から「大江戸魔方陣」「東京魔方陣」も出ています。「今更~？」と思わずに、「帝都物語」とあわせて読んでみてください。きっと、今自分が住んでいる土地の風景に、違う風景が重なって見えてくる…はずですよ。

表紙に惹かれて買ってしまった加門七海の探求本。
気がつけば彼女の作品はこういうのばかりを読んでいる私。

東京の守護神と呼ばれているのは何故か。
本当に現在も神であるのか。
疑問から始まり、解明へと向かう謎解きが面白い。
あれも結界、それも結界という導き出された答えが更に面白かった。
何はともあれ、私はこの手の話が大好き。

『大江戸魔方陣』『東京魔方陣』と続きも出ているらしい。
