『銀河ヒッチハイク・ガイド』ファン待望の第四弾。本国では１９８４年に発表された作品ですが、ようやくここに本邦初訳となりました。
　今回は地球に戻ってきた（！）アーサーのラブ・ストーリー。このシチュエーションは、作者の執筆時の心境を反映しているそうです。ちなみにアーサーのお相手は、一作目に登場したあの女性です。
　過去の三作とはちょっと毛色が異なり、今までは周囲に振り回されっぱなしという印象だったアーサーの成長・心理の描写が細やかで引き込まれます。フォードやマーヴィンも引き続き登場しますし、前作のラストにあった「神のメッセージ」をオチにした本作の構成は、当シリーズにここまで付き合った読者にはとても楽しめる作品ですね。
　シリーズ最終作となる”Mostly Harmless”も近刊予定とのこと。楽しみです。

映画化された「銀河ヒッチハイクガイド」３部作の４冊目。
日本語訳されたのは、これが初めてです。

実はダグラス・アダムスは３冊目で終えるつもりだったのに、諸事情により無理やり書くことになったといういわくつきの作品。
そういう事情もあって、これまでの３作とは趣が違い、宇宙ＳＦというよりは、地球ラブロマンス（？）といった中身になっている。
もちろん、おなじみのキャラクターたちは登場するものの、いきなり舞台が地球に戻っていたりするので、「あいつは一体どうなった（？）」と気になることばかり。この辺りは、最終作「ほとんど無害」で明かされるのかな？

本編とは違った楽しみの＜外伝＞という雰囲気で、中身もこれまでよりはおとなしめですが、こうういうのもありでしょう。
ここまで来たら「毒食えば皿まで」で、最終回まで読むつもりです。

邦訳版の「銀河ヒッチハイクガイド」シリーズの3作目のあとがきで紹介されている三部作の"4作目"が、この本です。シリーズ1作目の冒頭でいきなり地球が破壊されてしまいますが、本作品では、パラレルワールドで地球がイルカに救われて破壊されなかった世界が舞台で、主人公アーサーデントは地球に帰ってきて、ある少女と知り合い、恋に落ちます。邦訳が出てないですが、一読の価値があると思います。
