ダグラス・アダムスは1978年にラジオの脚本を執筆した、とあるが、多分前年に公開された映画スターウォーズを観ていただろう。
スターウォーズのアメリカ的思考（勧善懲悪、師弟愛、友情、挫折しながらも果敢に運命に立ち向かう主人公,etc.）に対するアダムス流の英国的返答と、見るのは考えすぎか？

独特の脱力感が面白い。なにせ登場人物全員がヘン、というかある意味、不真面目。
頭がいいんだか悪いんだか、危機的状況にあっても、決して焦らない。（そう、Don't panic.　がガイドの表紙ですからね）

特筆すべきは、訳文のうまさ。
原文でしか分からない面白さもあると思うが、読んでいて途中で何回も吹き出してしまった。
よくここまで無理のない日本語に移し変えたものだと思う。

「銀河ヒッチハイクガイド」シリーズ第1作です。 シリーズは,
　　(1)「銀河ヒッチハイクガイド」
　　(2)「宇宙の果てのレストラン」
　　(3)「宇宙クリケット大戦争」
　　(4)「さようなら、いままで魚をありがとう 」
　　(5)「ほとんど無害」
の全５巻です。
シリーズにはなっていますが，本書「銀河ヒッチハイクガイド」は1冊で完結しています。
著者は，本書をシリーズ物にするつもりはなかったそうですので，1冊目がきっちり完結
しているのも当然ではあります。本書がが好評だったために，2巻以降が書かれたそうで
す。

内容は，SF的コメディです。「ナンセンスなギャグで笑ってもらいましょう」という作品
です。英語の原書は「ウイットにあふれるブリティッシュジョークを堪能する」作品であ
ろうことが推測される内容です。25年前にイギリスで発行された原作を2005年に日本語版
として出版したのが本書です。

人類が宇宙に進出していく未来世界を描いたSFが多い中で，本書は異色です。
本書では，人類は宇宙の中心的存在ではありません。宇宙人と戦ったりもしません。人類
などは，取るに足らない存在として，地球ごといきなり消滅してしまいます。

「地球は宇宙の中心ではないどころか，単なる凸凹（ネタバレになるので言えません）に
過ぎないんだよ。」という発想は，斬新で，新鮮で，まさにコペルニクス的新発想でした。

ギャグ満載のコメディ調で書いているのも，「人類などはシリアスな作品に取り上げる価
値もない取るに足らない存在である。人類など，コメディの材料で十分だ」，という主張
のように思えました。

新潮文庫版も、もちろん原書も読んだが今回の訳は極めて判りやすい訳になっている。
もちろん風見氏の訳は原文に極力忠実にという方針なのだろうが、英国のユーモアについてなにがしかの知識のない地球人には判りにくい嫌いがある。
それにくらべて安原氏の訳は、初めて銀河ヒッチハイクに乗り出す極東系地球人にとっても十分親しみやすいものだろう。
少々意訳が過ぎるかと思われる箇所も見受けられるが、すんなり楽しく読める点で高く評価したい。

ただし、原書からして誰が読んでも面白いという本ではない。
悪名高いヴォゴン人の詩に突っ込みを入れられ、気分障害のアンドロイドのあしらいに長け、頭２つに腕３本の元銀河帝国大統領と丁々発止のやり取りができる方なら１００％楽しめるだろうが、
しかし皮肉とユーモアを解さない想像力に欠けた御仁はテレビのバラエティでもザッピングしておられた方がよろしいかと思われる。
