バロウズといえば『裸のランチ』ですよね。でも、難解なランチを最後まで食べれたかたは少ないのでは？それとくらべて、『ジャンキー』は誰でも読めますよ。翻訳がうまいのか、文章にスピード感があっていいです。

スピードある自伝記で著者自身の麻薬常習経験を語った本です。
ケルアックの”路上”をもっと麻薬の話に絞った感じですが、自分自身の経験からなる禁断症状の描写がもの凄く鮮明で真実みがあり、同時にハイになったときの感覚の描写もおもしろい。

例えば、メキシコでドラッグ性のあるサボテンを仲間で食べてドライブをしているとき、仲間が”あの銀行を見てみろよ。サボテンに見えるぜ”といって、主人公はそんな分けないと思いながら、実際みるとサボテンにしか見えなかったり。おかしくて笑ってしまう文章もありエンターテイニングな本である。

彼が言うには、麻薬とは生き方であり、ジャンキーにとってドラッグとは朝起きて、ベッドから出て、歯を磨き、髭を剃るためにドラッグが必要なのである。

巻頭の解説ですが、バロウズが「ブレードランナー」脚本を書いたという
のは誤りです。「映画ブレードランナー」という本を書いてはいますが、
これはリドリー・スコットの映画とは無関係です。また、バロウズが自分
の育ちを隠すためにリーという筆名を使った、という記述も疑問です。
家族に配慮した、というのはあるようですが。

バロウズの本としてはいちばんまとまりのある読みやすいものでしょう。
英語の勉強にもおすすめです。あと、ぼくも解説コラムを書いてます。
