一九二八年にオーシュ卿という匿名で地下出版されたバタイユの最初の小説。本書は、著者が後に新版として改稿したものと比べて全篇にわたって夥しい異同がある。サド以来の傑作と言われるエロティシズム文学として、「球体幻想」を主軸に描き上げた衝撃作であり、二十世紀の文学史上、最も重要な異端文学のひとつとして評価され続けている。


著者略歴 (「BOOK著者紹介情報」より)

バタイユ,ジョルジュ
1897‐1962年。フランスの作家、思想家。古文書学校を卒業後、国立図書館などに務める。「ドキュマン」誌や「クリティーク」誌で思想運動を展開しながら、『無神学大全』三部作や『呪われた部分』『エロチシズム』など多くの著書によって西欧思想を根本的に問い直し、二十世紀の最重要思想家の一人と評される

生田 耕作
1924‐94年。京大文学部卒。京大名誉教授、フランス文学者。ブルトンやバタイユ、セリーヌやマンディアルグなど「異端」の文学を精力的に翻訳・紹介する(本データはこの書籍が刊行された当時に掲載されていたものです)

　この小説を読んで真っ先に思い浮かべたのは、かの司馬遷「史記」における「眼」の執拗な記述のことである（加地伸行「史記-司馬遷の世界」講談社現代新書を参照）。バタイユが史記を知らなかったとすれば、やはり眼球というテーマを取り上げたことには精神分析的に意味のあることだったのだろうか。「眼球譚」のあとで、「司馬遷」を一読するときっと興味を惹かれることと思う。

近代とは身体のあらゆる感覚の中で
視覚が過大に重視された時代でありました。
この著作は視覚への偏りという社会の歪みが
バタイユを通して表現されたものだと思います。

あらゆるものを原初の闇へ
視覚が意味を成さぬ闇の中へ。

理解を深めたい方は
塚原史『ダダ・シュルレアリスムの時代 』
ジョルジュ・バタイユの眼球
を読まれることをお勧めします。

　この作は、「死者」「マダム・エドワルダ」と並んで、エロテシズム三部作である。バタイユの最重要書物の一つだ。
　エロテシズムすなわち性なるもの＝聖なるものは、「死」と「狂気」を媒介としなければ、成立する事無く、徹底孤独ながら、《他者》との連続性を求める、矛盾したものだ。
　日本人で正しく理解した小説家は、三島由紀夫ただ一人、…あとは皆が知っているとおり、エピゴーネン「亜流」ばかりがだらだら続く。
ロジェ・ラパルトによると格調高い精緻なフランス語で描かれているらしい。原語で読んでみたいものだ。
