　３０年ほど前になるか、「エマニエル夫人」に始まるフランス風ソフトポルノ映画が大流行した時代があった。
「O嬢の物語」も映画化された。
中学生だった私はモデルから転身したという美貌の女優の映画ポスターに通学路で遭遇したが、見ちゃだめかも…と下を向いて通り過ぎたものだ。　以来、この作品にサディスティックなポルノ小説というイメージを私は長く持っていた。
　しかし渋澤龍彦の翻訳はいかに？と、読み始めて肝を潰した。　
　この文学の完成度の高さたるや、読み終わってしばし呆然としてしまった。
　ファッションカメラマンである　Oは、ある晩恋人にパリ郊外の館に連れて行かれる。　その館では男たちが自分の恋人をサディスティックな性の奴隷・人形に改造するべく教育を施していた。　O も抗うことなく、その教育を受け容れる。　恋人を愛していたからだ。　使われる道具、装う衣装のディテールまで事細かに表され、貴族趣味たっぷりの描写は真に迫っている。　性的なシーンに品格すら感じる。　性の奴隷となったO嬢に不思議な崇高さを感じるのは私だけではないはずだ。
　登場人物中、イニシャルだけなのはO嬢だけであるし、性的な行為の中でさえ彼女のエクスタシーの描写は全くない。　完全に彼女の人間性は抹殺されているように見えるが、実はO嬢自身がそれを望んだのだ。　気高く崇高な性の奴隷と成り上がっていく？様子が美しく端整な描写で表現されていく。　サディスティックな性の行為のひとつひとつが、まるで厳粛な儀式であるようだ。　この不思議な感動は何だろう。　いやはや本当に読んで良かった…

伝説的な一冊ですが、実はそれほどエッチな訳ではありません。そう言うのを期待して読むとがっかりするかもしれません。しかし、そこに書かれている内容は、異常なまでのエネルギーをもって引っ張られます。自由を手放し、誰かの所有物（奴隷）になっていく快感と幸福は、はたから見れば異常であり不思議に思えるが、彼女の告白を読む限り、決して蔑むべきものではなく、むしろ恋愛を越えた深い愛を感じます。ご注意ください！この本は強力な魔力をもっている本です。人によっては魔法にかかってしまう場合があります。

一読して日本人には描けないタブ-の美しさを感じた。
渋沢龍彦の翻訳はさすがの出来で、西洋小説の構築を全く以って壊していない。むしろ、私たちに仏蘭西小説の普遍的な美しさを目前に展開させてくれる。

今、騒がれている芥川賞の作者と比べようもできない倒錯の世界が完璧に描かれ、現実感と幻想とを織り交ぜ、毒という甘美な福音をもたらしてくれる真実の小説である。
