『ソドム120日』で語られる放蕩の120日が始まる前の、いわば序章部分の翻訳。4人の非道哲学者は、語り部にさまざまな放蕩を語らせることによって、人間のあらゆる情欲を分析しようと試みる。その方法はもちろん、経験論に基づく実践、つまりサディスティックな饗宴ということになる。原稿を紛失した際、サドが「血の涙を流した」ことからも分かるように、この作品には彼のすべてがあるといっても過言ではない。「すべてを言」おうとする百科全書的精神、ひとを寄せつけない舞台装置としての城、延々と反復される哲学論議と饗宴の描写、語られる美と描かれる醜、数字への偏執的なこだわり、などなど。本書は抄訳だが、こういったサド的世界の雛型として十分に通用する部分が訳されているので、サド入門として恰好の一冊と言えるだろう。
澁澤節がよほど嫌いでない限りおすすめです。

「ソドムの百二十日」は、佐藤春夫による完訳がある。
それを読んでしまった後だと、この澁澤訳は、ほんの冒頭部分が書かれているだけで、どうにも物足りない。
ぜひ、澁澤訳での完訳を読みたかったです。
なぜなら、「ソドムの百二十日」の素晴らしさは、この後の部分を読まないと分からないだろうから。

ほとんど他人に薦める機会がない作品だと思うが、人間の性的な想像力の極北を見てみたい方 には、「悪徳の栄え」とセットでお薦めの作品である。これと比べれば、沼正三の作品などは かわいらしいものである。これは実は抄訳であるけど、もともとの原典も完結していないのは残念。
