とても好きな本です。
全体が生の倦怠に満ちあふれている。主人公ははたから見ればとても幸せなひとだろうに、生に倦みきって生きながら死んでいる。
現れた男は彼女の「生きている不安」をあぶり出しにきたような気がする。恋愛にはそういう面も確かにあると思う。
印象的だった場面は、息子がピアノのレッスンを受けている場面と、
パーティーの時、胸につけている花があまりに匂って、主人公が息苦しくなってくる場面。
まるで見てきたように焼きついています。
なんといっても、二人のこの会話に尽きます。
「あなたは死んだ方がよかったんだ」「もう死んでるわ」
読んでいる間、私の中でも「生の不安」が匂い立ってくるようでした。

倦怠した日常社会からの脱出を願う人妻アンヌが、ある情痴殺人事件をきっかけに、内にこもっていた情熱に気づき、その開放を求めはじめるのです。この本には、愛と死、いっけんちぐはくにみえる会話、しかしその行間にあふれる沈黙の複雑な奥行き、ひそみよる狂気…といったデュラスのエッセンスがあふれており、わたしはこの本によってデュラスの世界にはまりました。現代人の内面の決裂を鋭く追究した、くりかえし手にとってしまう一冊です。

ただ港のカフェで若奥さんと、労働者が出会い、恋に落ち、それが破局する。よくある話で分量も少なく、読んでいて一見軽く感じるけれど、人物の設定（相手役の労働者と、その同業者やピアノを弾きたがらない息子など）が絶妙で、たまに挿入される回想場面も効果的であり、なんだか軽いはずなのに頭に残るといった不思議な印象を受ける作品。
