有名な龍馬暗殺に関しては、さすがにもう新ネタはないのでは、と勝手に思い
込んでいましたが、あるもんですなぁ――。
びっくりしました。著者の本気度がビンビン伝わってきます。
しかも本格ミステリーの雰囲気も味わえるのですから、歴史もののアームチェア・ディテクティヴ（安楽椅子探偵）ですね。
「フーダニット」〈犯人〉「ホワイダニット」〈動機〉アリバイと謎の解明がそろってます。

文章は簡潔で読みやすい。それでいて内容は論理的で、切り口は鋭い。
本書の登場で、龍馬暗殺事件の謎が解かれた。
そういって、過言ではないと思います。ということで、☆５つ進呈します。

通説にとらわれない、新視点の謎解きが、実に見事に決まりました。
歴史ノンフィクションですが、まるで良質のミステリーを読んでいるような感じ。面白かったです。

何よりもテーマを「近江屋の惨劇」に絞ったのが、本書の最大の勝因でしょう。
それと事件の時系列的な整理、考察は見事というより他になく、非常に説得力があります。
また引用史料も意訳なので、初心者の私でも、興味深く関係者の証言を読むことができました。

発売当初、興味深く読了。龍馬暗殺の謎（「フー・ダニット」および「ホワイ・ダニット」）を解きほぐす論理の鮮やかさに舌を巻いた覚えがある。
今回、ＮＨＫ大河ドラマ「龍馬伝」スタートを機に再読したが、初読時にも増して「龍馬暗殺本」決定版の感を深めた。襲撃者の「コナクソ」の声音、遺留品の「刀の鞘と下駄」、また峰吉少年の証言の矛盾など、全てが合理的に解明される終盤は、良質のミステリを読むが如し。（何せ、峰吉少年が、かのブラウン神父の「見えない男」に擬せられるのである！）
ただ筆致は冷静だが、殺害現場の描写は「中岡慎太郎の右手首は皮一枚を残すだけ」、「遺体の刀傷は、龍馬は三十四か所、慎太郎は二十八か所のメッタ斬り」など凄惨を極める。明るく始まったＮＨＫの福山・龍馬も、実はこの血腥い終焉へと一歩一歩向かっているのである。そうした歴史の重みを感じる意味でも、ＮＨＫドラマ鑑賞に必携の一冊と言えよう｡
