『ブエノスアイレス午前零時』と聞くと、南米を舞台にした壮大な物語か、と思ったのですが、実際には作品の舞台は辺鄙な雪国のはやらない温泉旅館です。

そういう舞台設定なのでどうしても、川端康成『雪国』のイメージと抒情が先入観となって頭を離れない、という状況で読んでしまいました。ただ、読了後もそのイメージは壊れることがなかったので、この作品自体にも、先入観と期待を裏切らない雪景色の情緒と日本語の描写の旨さがあるということだと思います。

作品には美しい芸者は登場しません。主人公の冴えない孤独な青年と、ヒロインの盲目の物忘れの激しい老女が踊るのですが、どう考えたって美しくはないはずのその場面が、ブエノスアイレスの雪とあいまって、どうしても醜い場面とは感じられないのです。
温泉卵の黄身の半熟加減のような、つかみどころのない味わいです。

雪の深い田舎の旅館の疲れた男と、盲目の老嬢の交流。惹かれたのは、文章。題名がとても魅力的なので、それを意識して手に取った人はガッカリするかもしれない。雪国の寂れた温泉宿の、疲れた男と、中年老年の人々が中心の、華やかではない話だからだ。この文章の魅力は、高齢の女性を、上品、かつ官能的に描いた表現にあると思う。このように表現できるのか、と驚いた。彼女は、ここではない、どこかの、例えばブエノスアイレスのような異国の街の空気を、纏って現れる。その風景を、ダンスを通して、男は見るのだ。

正直いって芥川賞をとるほどの作品かと言えば、そうではない気がする。
特に題名に騙されたという気持ちは払拭できない。

内容は前半から中盤にかけてが退屈で、
たったこれだけのページ数であるにもかかわらず一気に読もうとしなかった。
☆が二つなのは、ラスト１０ページぐらいの表現は嫌いではないから。
それでも好きとは言えない。

　もちろんわざとなんだろうけどさ、もう何十年もまえの作品に思えてなんか不愉快。教科書とか、入試に出てきそうな話だなぁって思った。感想はそれだけ。
