5.0 out of 5 stars 筒井康隆の叙情性が凝縮された作品, 2002/4/23
SF・スラップスティック作家というイメージとは裏腹に、『旅のラゴス』『白い猿』『佇む人』など、筒井氏の著作にはへたな「自称」文学作家よりもはるかに叙情性を湛えた作品が多くある。そのなかでも珠玉の出来としか言い様のないのが本書だ。

生きるためには悪行をも重ねなければならない世界で、死と再生を相繰り返すそれぞれの登場人物たち。彼らは死のたびに、よりひどい世界に生まれ変わる宿命だ。騙しあい、疑りあい、殺し合い、食べあう。人間が次の世界では人間ではなくなる。

そんななか、まだましな世界だった前世・前々世のかすかな幸福の記憶が各登場人物の胸のうちで、小さな蝋燭の炎のようにゆらめく様。それは、生きとし生けるものの存在の儚さ、悲しさの象徴のようで、言いようのない悲しみを覚えさせられる。筒井康隆の一番のお薦めを一冊挙げろと言われたら、私は迷わず本書を選ぼう。

~文学そのものの成立原理すら平気でちゃかして相対化してしまう筒井康隆のパロディ精神を、全くシリアスな形で再構成したのがおそらくこの本。果て無き因果応報に支配された、仏教的で不毛な砂漠の中の地獄世界。毒を注入しては去る巨大な虫、怪物に転生しかつての仲間を泣きながら食らう悪夢。いったい何がこの世界の原因なのか。登場人物達の遠い記憶の探し~~当てた物語とは・・・諦念と煩悶、叙情と残酷。未だ正当に評価されていない感のある、日本文学史上まれに見る特異な作品である。~
