「あたしたちカッコ良かったよね」・・・そう、確かに君たちはカッコ良かったよ。しかし、カッコ良さは一通りじゃない。それに、カッコ良さというものは、年齢とともに形を変えてゆく。君たちはこれからも、カッコ良くあり続けるべきだった。

バブル経済最盛期、経済的には何不自由ない若者たちの、青春のきらめきと儚さを描く一種の純愛物語。恋愛と喪失感とが表裏一体であることを思い出させてくれる、切ない作品である。当時の若者ことばをふんだんに取り込みながら、時代に流されない普遍性を獲得した傑作。自殺した作者の思いは、ひょっとするとこの時期すでに、主人公のひとりである理恵に投影されていたのではないかと考えたら、彼女の自暴自棄ともいえた生活に納得がいくように思える。もちろん、大きな誤解だと言われたらそれまでだけれど。

青春ものの本で、初めて良かったと思える作品でした。
その年代にしか見えないもの、感じられないものの切なさ、美しさ。
作者はバブリーな時代の人だそうで、その感性も随所に表れています。
キレイ事で描かれていない所が、とても好きです。

1990年「文芸」に発表された、都会を舞台とした恋愛小説である。
量・質とも鷺沢萠の初期青春ものの代表作であろう。
初版は1990年6月29日に発行されている。

私はこの頃、同い年の鷺沢萠と同じ大学に通う学生だった。
その前は本書に登場する「バスケ部の吉留」という人物が、
通っていたとされる都内私立高校生だった。
だから当時、本書のページをめくりながら、
果たしてモデルは誰だろうか、などと考えながら
本書の表層だけをなぞっていた気がする。

本書では同じ青春ものの『少年たちの終わらない夜』において
既に現れている喪失感と疎外感が
いっそう突き詰められ、ピュアに表現されている。

悪ふざけをしていれば済んだハイティーンを過ぎて、
20歳を跨ぐという微妙な時期に、徐々に社会というものとの妥協を強いられ、
何か大事なものを失っていくのを見送るしかない喪失感。
そしてバブル絶頂期の意匠が氾濫する都会の大学で、
そのことを通過儀礼として当たり前のように受け入れていく
非―スタイリッシュな学友たちの中で、
心の奥底の方で孤立していく疎外感。

この喪失感と疎外感に永遠に抗おうとしても尚、
非情に時は過ぎ、二人は別れることになる。
その頑なな態度と、今だから解る不器用な美しさを
青春と呼ばずしてなんと呼ぼうか。
