僕は著者より３年上の世代なのですが、最初に表題作を読んで、東京にはこんな生活をしている高校生がいるのか、と世間知らずの僕は思ったものです。でも、作品全体を貫いている「食うか食われるか」といった、ピリピリした空気みたいなものは確かに自分にも経験があり、現実味というか、共感を覚えました。

以来、鷺沢作品を読み継いでいます。というよりも、僕が小説というものをまともに読むようになったきっかけのような本です。

鷺沢萠の本が好きでよく読んでるけど、彼女の作品で初めて読んだのがこの本だった。収録されている作品は全部良かったけれど、特にティーンエイジ・サマーが気に入って何度も読み返した。自分が主人公と年齢が近いということもあり、10代最後の夏をテーマにしたこの作品には共感や憧れ、焦燥感などを抱いた。

彼女の描く世界はどこか屈折している印象を受ける。でもやはり人間とは屈折した生き物であることは間違いないし、そういったリアルな描写に魅力を感じる。

「文芸」に発表された4短編を収録した、鷺沢萠初の単行本である。
私の持っている初版は、その発行日が1989年9月29日となっている。
今から15年も前のハナシだ。

私はその頃彼女と同じ大学に通う学生だった。
その前は本書に登場するハイティーンたちと
同じようなことを考え、暮らしていた都内の私立高校生だった。
（もちろんこんなに格好良くはなかったが）
だから当時、本書のページをめくりながら、
その時代の空気を存分に楽しめたものだった。

まがりなりにも大人になった現在、本書を読み返してみたところ
読み通すのに若干骨が折れた。
バブル前夜のこの時代を包む数々の意匠を
若さの煌めきではなく、虚飾のように感じてしまうのだ。
これは当時非常に読みにくかった『川べりの道』が
家族を持った今、すんなりと頭に入ってくるのと表裏の関係なのだろう。

しかしその意匠を苦労して飲み込んだ後、残る透明な喪失感と疎外感は
やはり秀逸と呼ぶしかないこの小説家の才気を感じさせる。
