ゴーリーお得意の、A to Z。ギャラクシーグラムか、華々しき鼻血か。どちらかでも読んだことがあれば、雰囲気が分かると思います。名前を適当に付けられていそうな幻獣達は、可愛くて、如何にも間抜けで、やる気が無さそう。ナンセンスな癒し系絵本です。ギャラクシーグラムの黒さに耐えらず、雑多なアルファベットはシュール過ぎる、という人にはお勧め。
特筆すべきは日本語訳。いくつかの作品で独特の、やや漢文調で古風な文体を使っていますが、今回は古風さをその儘に、なんと和歌に仕上げています。いや名訳。原文と合わせて読むと尚良しです。

　ゴーリーの世界にすむ架空の動物たち。
　内容の形式はギャシュリークラムのちびっ子たちと同じで、薄気味悪い動物たちがＡ〜Ｚまで順番に紹介されてます。
　ゴーリー好きの方なら気に入るのでは？と思います。

ゴーリーの描きだす世界は
美しく夢のある絵本の、恐ろしいほど完全な影をなしている。
明るく彩られた絵本のさすベクトルの、寸分の狂いもなく反対側をさしている。
だからこそ、どんなに絶望的な物語であろうが、奇妙なゆがんだ世界であろうが、悪趣味に陥ることなく、「絵本」というもののもつ本来の美しさをそのまま保持している。

その微細な線で描かれる恐ろしくもまた、奇妙な世界は、うつくしい。
そのなかの本の一冊、『まったき動物園』のなかには
架空の生き物が描かれ、短歌形式の訳文が付いている。
それだけでも十分に楽しい。
のだが
ぱたんと本を閉じた後、気が付くのだ。
この本の中にみた「この世界にいてはいけないものたち」の存在をいま
知ってしまった事を。

うつくしく異形な者たちの動物園。
世界との違和をここまで表している本もそうそうはない。
世界とのひずみに引き込まれてゆくような力を感じ
果たして、この目に見える世界だけがすべてなのだろうかと
思わされる作品だった。
この作品に出会えたことを、とても感謝している。
（読後感、なんともいえないざらつきが残るけどね）
