子どもの頃、とても恐かったもの。夜のトイレ、無口な隣のおじさん、祖母の死、暗い階段を登る夢、人の顔に見える天井のシミ。この本のページをめくりながら忘れ去っていたはずの幼い記憶をずいぶん思い出した。恐いけれど見ずにはいられない。このモノクロームの絵だけの世界は記憶のひだを刺激するのみならず、読む人の想像力が許す限りどこまでも深くさまよえる。大人のための魅力的で恐い本です。

この絵本を見て、何が想像できるでしょうか。夜一人で部屋にいる時、ふと顔を上げるとこの本が目につきます。そして手にとってしまう。何故か読んでしまう。本が呼んでいるのか、私が求めているのか。ゴーリーの本は依存性の高い本ばかりですが、この本はその中でも最高の物だと思います。

何度も読み返すうちに、
ああ誰かお願いこの状況を説明して！！！と叫び出しそうになる。

ドアの向こう側のドアの向こう側のドア…
何かあるのでは…と勘繰ってしまう模様の絨毯・絵画・ツボ。
倒れている男は、死んでいるのか生きているのか…
水が半分まで溜まった部屋のようにも見えるし、からっぽの部屋にも見える部屋。
何でここにコレがあってアレがないのか。

暗がりが、すきまが、男が、女が、子供が、ドアが、部屋が、建物が、
全てが意味を持つようで、まったく意味を持たないようで。


とにかく怖いです。
言いようのない不安は、見れば分るはず。
