オススメクラシックCD本は巷に溢れているが、本当に耳の良い批評家なのかどうか、あるいは楽器のことを殆ど知らないのではないかと疑われるような内容のものが多い。こうした中、本書は有名ヴァイオリニストの長所・短所を実に的確に指摘し、実に納得させられる部分が多い大変密度の濃い本である。ライブで聴こえる音と録音の音の認識を弁別しながらの慎重かつ、時に手厳しく冷静な批評は購入するCD選びをする際に大変参考になる。

なお、項目立てて取り上げられているヴァイオリニストは以下の通り。

クライスラー、ティボー、ブッシュ、シゲティ、ハイフェッツ、フランチェスカッティ、ミルシテイン、オイストラフ、メニューイン、リッチ、シェリング、ヌヴー、スターン、グリュミオー、ギトリス、コー!ガン、ヘンデル、スーク、フェラス、アッカルド、パールマン、カントロフ、クレーメル、チョン、ズーカーマン、ムローヴァ、サレルノ＝ソネンバーグ、ムター、ツィンマーマン、レーピン、みどり、ヴェンゲーロフ、それに「日本のヴァイオリニストたち」。

5.0 out of 5 stars ずっと手元に置いておきたい本！, 2007/3/9
なぜか皆さん星の数が少なく、辛口コメントが多いようですが、この本はサブタイトルにもあるとおり、「名演奏家を聴く」です。「演奏家名鑑」ではありません。ですから、演奏家に関する情報も事細かに書く必要はないと思いますし、そんなの自分でお調べになったら？と申し上げたいです。著者はこの本にある全てのバイオリニストが「名演奏家」と認めた上で、批評をしている訳ですから、チョン・キョンファ、ムローヴァ好きにごまをする必要もなければ、中立的見地に立つ必要もないでしょう。主観的なのも当たり前。そもそも、人の書いたものに”客観性”を求めることからしてナンセンスです。

あと、諏訪内晶子と五嶋みどりの生演奏を聴いたことがありますか？私は諏訪内晶子の項がなくて正解だったと思いますよ。難を言えばジョシュア・ベルの記載がなかったことくらいかしら？

　現代のヴァイオリニストの録音や実演に関する評論をまとめた書物。著者は、伝統的な中部ヨーロッパの教育プログラムから出てきたヴァイオリニストと、アメリカの新しい教育プログラムを経てコンクール優勝の経歴を引っ提げて登場するヴァイオリニストには質的な相違がある、という独自の視点を持っており、それが全編を貫く。

　シェリングやグリュミオー、ギトリス、カントロフ、クレーメルなどの欧州勢には好意的な評論が多かったが、チョン・キョンファを筆頭にジュリアード出身者には厳しい評価が並んだ。本書の中には、次のような表現すら登場する

　「1980年代後半から90年代に猖獗を極めた、という言い方が不穏当ならば隆盛を誇った『アメリカン』で『非正統な』（と私には感じられる）ヴァイオリン演奏の流儀やヴァイオリニストたち」（124頁）

　このような挑発的な表現を含む本書については賛否両論があるとおもう。わたしは、評論などというのは誰が書いても必ず主観が混入するものであり、客観的な評論などというものはありえないと考えているので、そのような前提に立って読む限り、ひとりの評論家の意見がしっかりと記された良い本だと思っている。
