   タイトルにひかれて表紙の絵に目を凝らせば、ハンカチで鼻を押さえた女が、岩の上にのけぞっている。厚い毛皮の外套を着た男が2人、鼻血の女には無関心で、彼方を見やる。裏表紙では、3人退場。代わりにとぼけた顔の白い犬が、女の倒れていたあたりをかいでいる。空には暗雲垂れこめて…。

   でも本書は、不吉な一篇の物語というわけではなく、26の個別な文と、緻密な白黒のペン画とで構成された、アルファベットブック。AからZまでの頭文字の副詞が、ワンセンテンスの短文の中に必ず含まれている。というより、その副詞を中心にしている点が、珍しい。

   たとえば「B」なら、「The creature regarded them Balefully」が原文。「まがまがしく／こ（子）らにらむ／いきもの」という訳文に、水から上がってきたばかりの変な生き物が、桟橋の上で3人の子どもをじっとにらんでいる絵。「E」は「Endlessly（とめどなく）」で、長い長いマフラーのはなし、などなど。それぞれは独立した場面だが、全体をタイトルに結びつく1つの筋に想像力でつなげようとして、はてつながるかどうか。ゴーリーの手品に挑むもよし、あるいはお好みの場面だけ、心の箱にしまっておくのもよい。

   訳文は、2から3行の縦書き平仮名。原文には必ずある主語が訳文にはなく、おまけに文頭の文字が黒丸に白抜きと目立つので、名調子のいろはカルタのよう。どのページにも、予感としての不吉は漂っているものの、ゲーム感覚で、楽しめる。（中村えつこ）

翻訳を担当している柴田元幸さんのエッセイが好きで手に取った作品ですが、「柴田さん、こんなの好きそうだなぁ」と妙に納得してしまう作品でした。

左のページにアルファベット順に副詞を使った一文があり、右のページにその絵が描かれている。その一文は妙な黒さと未来に対する暗示をもっており、添えられている絵も同様です。

しかも、その絵は文の雰囲気を余すことなく具現化しているので、技術の高さに驚かされました。

私たちの心を曖昧に揺らすよう、非常に計算されて作られている秀作。

無気味だけどセンス溢れるゴーリーのアルファベットブック。ここのABCは副詞の紹介。一般的にはあまり良い意味では使われない副詞ばかりで、まあここまでよくも集めたものだと笑えてしまう。それでも読後に感じる小気味良さがいい。ハマるかも。ただし、子供のABC学習には薦められない。

「い…いぬもあるけば棒に当たる」のイロハカルタみたいにA-Ｚまでを象徴する単語を核に文とイラストを添えた本です。こういうのを「アルファベットブック」っていうらしいですね。にしてはハチャメチャです。A-Zをつとめて不謹慎な副詞（わいせつに、ぼうぜんと、さっするになど）でとらまえた妙な文。そして全体的に陰鬱な絵。これをみていったい何をどうすればいいのか。もはやこれは「人間のマイナス面のA-Z」としか捕らえようがないやね。子供にお勧めできないと大人は思う。しかし、子供はこういった本が好きだろうと直感できる絵本です。
