　旧ユーゴスラヴィアの理論家スラヴォイ・ジジェクによれば、先のユーゴ紛争は、それぞれの国が自らを「東洋的野蛮」に対して「ヨーロッパ文明」を守る境界線として位置付ける争いだったそうです。同じく旧ユーゴ出身のエンキ・ビラルの描く『モンスターの眠り』の３人の主人公は、戦闘中のサラエボに生まれ、３０年後の未来ではそれぞれ境界線上の人生を送っています。イスラム教徒の名を持ちながら、アナーキーに徹するアミール。イスラエル紛争を解決した（という設定の）政治家を義父に持つ天文学者レイラ。NIKEという無国籍な名を持つ記憶のスペシャリスト＝未だ「歴史」の中に生きている、ナイク。３人はオプスキュランティス・オーダーという謎の組織の台頭により、運命を引き合わせていきます。「伝統」の完全保存を目的とするオプスキュランティズム＝反啓蒙主義は近代世界が内包する分裂や矛盾を隠蔽し、統一性の幻想を捏造する考え方に結びつきます。これに立ち向かうにはいかなる境界線を死守し、あるいは破棄していかねばならないのでしょうか？コジェーヴが「歴史以後」の生き方として挙げた「アメリカ的消費生活」でも「日本的スノビズム」でもない、フランス＋東欧的な第３のモデルをこの３部作（予）が示してくれるかもしれません。彼ら３人はジジェクのいう境界線の「外部」に生まれ、そのエッジに沿って未来に生きているのですから。

　ビラル作品はビジュアルのみならず、鋭い洞察力に支えられた深遠なストーリーにも魅力があります。是非邦訳版で読んでみて下さい。フォントまでこだわったフランス版を同時に購入するのもいいと思います（日本語のフォントも、もう少し厳選して欲しい...）。サブテキストとして坂口 尚の『石の花』をお薦めします。

個人的にはニコポルよりも映像作品的なこっちの方が好きです。
主人公の生誕まで遡る記憶と、進行してゆく時間軸の交錯が趣き深い。
真の巨悪、そして運命的な再会。
続きがでてほしいような、これで終わってもいいような不思議な余韻を感じました。
