ル＝グィンが、ウェルギリウスの叙事詩「アエネーイス」をもとに、そこに登場するラウィーニアを語り手に描く「ローマ前夜」のファンタジーです。

ウェルギリウスと言う詩人も、ましてや「アエネーイス」と言う作品も知らず、「ローマ」の成立についても世界史の授業で習ったありきたりの伝説しか知らない私でさえ、「ローマ前夜」はかくもありなんと思える説得性のある文章で描かれています。

何よりも、今までのル＝グィンの作品ほど説明的でなく、あくまで「物語」中心の作品であり、非常に完成度の高い作品です。
カバーに「ル＝グィンの最高傑作」とありますが、確かにそう言えるだけの作品だと思います。

物語は、ラウィーニアがお告げによって、トロイア戦争の英雄アエネーアスに出会うもので、彼の波乱万丈の人生同様、幾多の苦難を乗り越えて、将来の王たるシルウィウスを育てる物語です。
非常に神話的な物語ですが、心に浸み込んでくる物語です。

この本は、「ゲド戦記」や「西の果ての年代記」などのファンタジー系のお話しとは少し毛色が違い、割と本格的な小説です。

ローマの詩人ウェルギリウスの叙事詩『アエネーイス』にインスパイアされて執筆された読み物です。
『アエネーイス』自体は、日本国内では絶版になっており、自身も読んだことないのですが、本書は古代イタリアを舞台にして、地方王族の王女であるラウィーニアが主人公となり、英雄アエネーアスとの出会い、そして後のローマ帝国につながる流れを、女性の視点で描いた作品です。

非常に完成度の高い小説で、大人が読んで楽しむ作品です。
ル=グウィンはもう70歳をはるかに越えた高齢の作家ですが、その中ではまだ新鮮な想いや気持ちが躍っていることが分かる、素晴らしい作品です。

前作「西のはての年代記3部作」ほど思索的な作品ではありませんが、ストレートに読み進むことが出来て、その中にもル=グウィンらしい考え方が反映している読み物です。

高校生ぐらいから楽しむことができる本ですので、ぜひどうぞ。
