死の床にある父を看取ろうとする息子が、父から聞かされてきたホラ話の数々を思い出していく。寂しがりやの巨人、人間ほどの大きさもある大ナマズ、若者の旅立ちを妨げる奇妙な町・・・。家に帰ってくることの少なかった父と、いつも孤独だった息子の間をたった一つ繋ぎとめた、あきれるほど突飛で、幻想的で、切ないエピソードが細切れに綴られていく。

イラストレイターである著者が本業の片手間に少しずつ書き溜めていったという本書。深みはないが、読みやすく、最後まで一気に読ませる。アメリカの伝統的トール・テイルの佳作。ティム・バートンが映画化したのも納得。

作者が、忙しい時間をぬって少しずつ書いたからなのか、私も少しずつでしか読めなかった。勿論、一気に読めないことも無かったのだが、何となくゆっくり読んでしまった。全編を通して、短い章をたくさん使って息子が父の人生を語る。父の死のシミュレーションが４パターン、断続的に入ってきたりと、かなり立体的な作り。

ティム・バートンはどう映画化したのか、観たくなった。好きな監督だし、それだけでも楽しみだけれどこの原作で…と想像しただけで楽しくなってくる。

まるごとジョークで出来た本、とも言えるし、ノスタルジックで切ない、とも言えそう。思うのは、何故こうも私たちは「お話」を欲するのかということ。お話、つまりフィクション。フィクションだと思っているものにリアリティを求めたりして私たちは矛盾しているけれど、確かなのは私たちはお話を愛しているということ。
そしてお話はフィクションだけれど嘘ではないということ、結局のところ私たちは嘘だと思っていないのだということに気付かされる本。
