ビート･ジェネレーションを代表する、ものすごく有名な作品です。
その知名度の高さは、前衛的なカット･アップ技法もさることながら、
バロウズという人自身の逸話の数々もあるのではないでしょうか？
それだけ強烈なキャラクターを持ち、色んな方面への影響力が強い人でした。
その破天荒な生活は自らの体験に基づく作品である『ジャンキー』などに表れてます。

自分が読んだ感じだと、もっぱらの評判通り「意味わかりません(爆)」
何かすごいものを読んだような、何かを理解したような気にもなりますが、
実際には何もわかっていない…
本当は意味など無いというのがホントのところかも知れません。

物語を論理的に説明しようとせずに、感性と想像力を働かせて読むと、
幻覚の中にいるような気分になり、凄くサイケデリックでシュールな映像が浮かびます。
こういう文章を書けるということがバロウズの類まれなる才能だったのかなぁ…
とも思ったりします。
しかし登場人物や舞台があまりに多い上に、ハッキリとしたストーリーの無い本ですから、
少しずつ読んでいると別の意味で混乱しそうです(爆)

ただ日本語に和訳することによって、元の文章の持つ雰囲気や、
ニュアンスが異なってしまっているとも感じています。
英語が理解度の高い人が、原本の文章が読めればまた大分印象が変わってくると思います。
原本の方がわかりやすいという話も…

ちゃんと読みました、最後まで。１０年前に読んだ時は、「バロウズの代表作」を読んだ自分が誇らしかった。内容については、さっぱり分からなかった。１０年後、読み返してみた。やはり内容は、何が言いたいのか、書きたいのか、分からない。途中、素晴らしいと思える文章はあります。しかし、それは孤高のロックスターが叫ぶ歌詞と変わらないのでは？と感じています。賞賛の声は多々あることは承知していますが、ぜひ読んで欲しい一冊、とは言えない、というのが正直な感想です。

射撃の名手。妻殺し。全てが奥さんとつながってしまう。バロウズは結局死ぬまで秘密を明かさなかった。真実はわからないいまま。不思議な男である、この本の中身も。何度も読み返すがそれだけである。変わった創作の仕方をするそうだから、文の内容に脈略がなくたっていいのだろう。原文で読んだことはないのでなんだが、原文で読めば何かわかるのだろうか。
