この本はおもしろいですか、と訊かれたら、ちょっと困る。いや、おもしろんですよ。でもこの作家の一冊目としてはお勧めしない。いきなり『みずうみ』ではなくて、一冊くらいほかの作品を読んでからのほうが入り込めそうな気がする。

第一章は神話的な世界。村ひとつが異世界なので、世界観がきっちり構築されていて非常に完成度が高い。
この世界を核として、第二章と第三章が展開されていく。喩えると、中央に豊かな水をたたえたみずうみ（第一章）があり、地下を通って街（第二章、第三章）に流れ出し、特定の場所（登場人物）から吹き出す、という感じ。

第二部のディティールは現実と同じだ。作者と同名の人物も出てきて、現実の居住地と同じ松本市に暮らし、東京では浅草界隈をふらつく。もうそのまんまである。
そこに内面の世界ともいうべき「みずうみ」が吹き出してくる。文字通り吹き出すのだ。そこから水脈をたどり、水の源流までさかのぼる人物も出てくる。
いしいしんじ作品における『意識』のメタファは水だ。村上春樹作品の登場人物が井戸に降りたり壁を抜けたりするようなものだ。村上作品では陰惨なイメージをともなう困難な冒険であるのに対して、この作品では「あるべき時、あるべき人には勝手に吹き出してくる」のがおもしろい。

小難しいことを考えなくても、描写を追いかけるだけで一冊が終わる。「ほとんど何も考えなくて良い」というと語弊があるけれど、すぐれた小説であれば、頭に文章を流し込むだけでその世界に入り込めるものだ。あとは物語に流されるまま、お楽しみください。

第1章は定期的に溢れる水を湛える、幻想的なみずうみを中心とした、いしいしんじワールド。
白いこびとカバのようなやわらかな生き物ジューイ、
記憶や風景や思いなど、様々な物を溢れる水に乗せて伝え拡げてゆく、湖畔のハンモックの中の深く眠れる語り部。
記憶の水先案内なのか、鯉守の家とそれを受け継ぐことになった少年。
目に見えないものや、流動的に一定の形を成さない記憶や思い、それらを象徴し司ってゆく事柄が描かれる。

第2章ではそれは現実に近いタクシー運転手の姿や日常を借りて、過去未来に緩やかに隅々まで巡っている
帯のような時間の地下水脈を伝って、裏町の売春宿で溢れ出す。
僅かに揺れる薄地の帳が仕切っている沢山の思いも描かれる。

第3章に描かれるのは作家自身とその妻や友人達を想起させる人々。
作家やその周りの人々が現実に行動したり動いたりした場所、時間、起こった象徴的な出来事・それらの記憶、形にならない思い、その意識の中を
様々な感情や記録を孕んでコポリコポリと溢れ出る水、出現するみずうみ。
第1章で現れていた様々な事柄や人々（或いはそれが託されていた役割）が
一方向に収斂して思いを形作ってゆく。


それらの根底に意識されるのは、目に見えなかったり、形になっていなかったとしても、
確実に存在していた事柄・物・人・現象、それに対する記憶、思いの肯定であり、畏敬の意識であり、オマージュだと思う。
今までの彼の作品世界をベースに、モチーフを現実世界にもリンクさせ、大きな共感と共に、新しく作品の振幅が広がった気がする一冊。

表紙装丁がいしいさんの著書の中でベスト！（個人的にですよ、もちろん。）
ポーの話と並ぶ内容！
主人公だけでなく脇役たちの良さも一級品。
心の中でしか映像化できないような描写が素晴らしい。
ポーの時もそうだったが読書中も読後も不思議と充実した気分につつまれる。
心のヒダが充実するふんわり感とでも言うか、、、そういう感情がいつもやってくる。
プロである多くの文章作家たちまでも魅了してやまないのも当然だと思える。
著者作品のファンはもちろん、初めての方にもぜひ読んでほしい。
