今、大学合唱団では木下牧子の「鴎」が共通の愛唱歌として歌われています。

譜面は簡単で繰り返しが多く、ト長調の調性も明るい響きを感じさせてくれます。１番、２番、３番と３回のバリエーションのどれもが、和声に工夫が凝らしてあり、オブリガードも自然な処理が行われていますので、とても歌いやすく、感情移入しやすいメロディーも持っています。音域に関しても何のムリもないので、合唱を始めた人でもすぐに歌えるのが、好感を持って愛唱されている理由だと思います。
テキストとして用いられた三好達次の詩の素晴らしさも愛唱される理由ですね。

１２回繰り返される「つひに　自由は　彼らのものだ」の間に挿入される象徴的な比喩。詩そのものが持っている音楽的なリズムを損なわずに、込められた情感を自然に表わした旋律とのマッチング。
三好達次の詩の世界を、木下牧子が格調高く、無限の広がりをもつ伸びやかな音楽を伴って、展開していきます。
　
この曲は、またアンコールピースとしてもよく歌われています。演奏会の興奮と感動、その後の開放感、それらすべてをこの「鴎」に込めて歌われます。
合唱団員の胸に満ち溢れた達成感と幸福感は、ホールにいた全ての聴衆にも共感をもって広がります。

「つひに　感動は　皆のものだ」と・・・・。
