本書は、英語圏の筆者による「シューベルト伝」。十九世紀前半のビーダーマイヤーと呼ばれる時代のウィーンで、三十一歳という短い生涯を閉じた音楽家シューベルトの実像が、対象と適度な距離を保ちながら、幅広い文献を基に客観的に描き出されている。時代と土地と人物と作品に投げかけられている筆者のまなざしは終始冷静で、他国者ゆえか時には遠慮がちに見えるところもあるが、その奥には常に、幼時より自分の心を掴んで放さない偉大な芸術家への、敬愛と哀惜の情を感じる。その一方で、頻繁にかなりの頁を割いて引用されている、シューベルト本人の日記や詩、友人や家族宛の手紙、友人たちの語るエピソードは、傷つきやすい生身の人間シューベルトの悲哀と慟哭を直截に訴えかけて、我々に強烈な印象を残す。
