著者はハワイ大で教鞭をとる韓国社会学者。
韓国の労働問題について'80年代から取り組んでいるベテランと言ってよい。
彼の手による初めてのモノグラフがこれ。
韓国の労働者・労働階級の一般的な生活や、
組合の結成される過程、政府に対する抵抗運動の様式、
これらの問題を歴史的文脈の中でうまくまとめあげている。

だが、正直言って、労働に対するバイアスが多少強いかもしれない。
労働に対する視線が同情的であるため、
客観的実証の難しい階級的民衆文化の醸成であるとか、
労働者意識の覚醒であるとかを説明しており、
読んでいて面白いがどうしても説得力に欠ける。

また、経済環境や使用者側に対する理解、

あるいは他国との比較がいまいち伝わってこないのが、残念であった。
