2002年の第３版以来、５年振りの改定です。
前の版から、セキュリティなどを扱った章を新設し、無線ＬＡＮ、マルチメディア通信などの記述が大幅に増やされています。
また、新しい技術に関する記述を追加するだけでなく、前の版で説明不足だったところや、分かりにくい文章なども書き直されています。
既に定評のある本ですが、それに甘んじることのない著者の姿勢がうかがえます。

ネットワークスペシャリスト資格の勉強用として購入致しました。

章・節ごとに上手くまとめられており、大変読みやすくなっています。

以前読んだ「２版」と比較して分かりづらい部分は簡素になっています。
逆に説明が十分でない物もあります。
（例えばDMZは図がなく説明分のみでイメージをつかみづらい）

読者層としては、初級シスアド程度の基礎知識があれば最適だと思います。
どのネットワーク参考書にもいえますが、最低でも１０進数＝２進数の変換やビット・バイト変換にある程度慣れていないと読み進めるのは難しいでしょう。

分かりづらい部分はネットで補完しながら読むと良いでしょう。

私が読んだのは初版だったが、当時からTCP/IPの入門編としてバイブル的存在だった。ネットワークの世界では技術革新が激しいが、本書を押さえて置けば幾らでも応用が効くと思う。

TCP/IPの全体の階層構造の説明から始まり、各階層の機能の説明、パケット内のフィールド構成と役割の詳細な説明が順を追って丹念に記述されているので、自然と理解がはかどる。机の傍に置いて、辞書代わりにも使用できる。

まさにTCP/IPの教科書中の教科書と言って良く、ネットワーク関連従事者は勿論の事、ブラック・ボックス的にネットワークを利用しているソフトウェア開発者にも教養として一読をお勧めしたい良書。
