元は O'reilly の本ですが、O'reilly Japan からではなく、オーム社からの翻訳本です。

OpenSSL は、コマンドライン・ツールの側面と、プログラミング・ライブラリの両方の側面をもっていますが、ライブラリの部分に関して、これだけ詳しく記述されている日本語の書籍は無いでしょう。

逆に、プログラミングに関する部分で多くのページを割いている分、SSL/TLS に関する知識は必須です。本の中でも、参考書として引き合いに出されている「マスタリングTCP/IP SSL/TLS編」（オーム社）などで、きちっと理解していないと、読み進めるのは難しいでしょう。そういった部分（SSL/TLS の仕組み）に関して、図解しているようなことはありません。

元の本がちょっと古い（OpenSSL 0.9.7 が登場した頃）点は少々気になりますが（訳注でフォローはされています）、それでも、OpenSSL に関して、ここまで解説されている本はありませんし、大変、貴重な本です。

ただ、個人的にはちょっと難しかったので、SSL/TLS をもう一度きちっと勉強してから出直したいと思います。

OpenSSLを利用した開発に関わる人のデスクに
必ずといっていいほどある気がする、そんな本です。
OpenSSLのライブラリについては、ネットを探しても日本語の
体系化されたドキュメントはほぼ皆無であり、和書でも
これとあと何冊かしかないと思います。
日本語も自然で読みやすいと思います。
ただ、他の人も書かれているように、各EVPのAPIの説明は詳しいですが、
それをどう使えば実装できるか？についてまでは紙面を割いていない
ようですので、他もあわせてあたったほうがよいと思います。
すでにある実装を読み解く、などの用途にはすぐに
役に立ってくれると思いますよ。

SSLを実装したアプリケーションを開発する人がおそらく必ず手にする本だと思われます。
基本的なSSLの知識、証明書やセキュア通信技術を知っている人向けの内容になっているため、
SSL初心者には少々難しい内容です。マスタリングTCP/IPのSSL編を読んでおくと少し楽になります。
この本の実装自体は完全ではなく、あくまで実装入門的な内容になっています。
この本で基本的なSSL実装とOpenSSLの概要をものにし、実装をより完全にしたい場合は別の本をあたる方がいいでしょう。
