子どもとつくるシリーズだったので工作教室のような内容を想像していましたが、全く子どもが読む本ではなく、子どもでもわかるように丁寧に説明されている大人の為の製本解説でした。中はほぼモノクロなのですが各工程写真が多く使われ、例えば糸でのとじ方はいうに及ばず糸の通し方〜始末にいたるまで非常に懇切丁寧に解説されています。
少々昔の本ではありますがこれを見ながら作ればきっちり基本が押さえられるので、素材（紙や布やボードの厚さなど）を変えても応用が利くと思います。
「チリ、ミゾ幅、背ボールの厚さと平ボールの幅の関係」この辺りがよく失敗するので知りたかった事です。

　自分で、特別な道具も使わずに、きちんとした本が作れます。説明も丁寧で、挿絵のアイディアまで載っています。
　読書が好きというより、本という物が好きな方、クラフトや雑貨が好きな方、絵やイラストを描いている方、絶対はまります！！

地味な印象だったのと『子供とつくる』シリーズの本だったので、初め敬遠して他の本を数冊購入して実際に本を作ってみましたが、チリ・ミゾ幅・背ボールの厚さと平ボールの幅の関係やクーターの作り方、気に入った布を使っての表紙ばりなど、疑問点が残っていたので、レビューを参考に購入しました。結果、最初にこの本を買っておけば良かったと思いました。ほとんどモノクロページだし、目で見て楽しむと言うより、とても実践的。全くの製本初心者が、すぐに作りたい本があるのなら、この本はぜひお勧めです。応用編の『手製本を楽しむ』ちょっとお値段が張りますが、こちらもぜひ購入したいと思いました。
