社会学者、作家。1943年シカゴ生まれ。リースマン、エリクソンらに師事し、20代半ばから都市論などを発表し注目を浴びる。73年よりニューヨーク大学教授を務め、同大学人文学研究所を設立。現在はマサチューセッツ工科大学(MIT)およびロンドン経済学校(LSE)教授としてロンドン在住。小説も発表し、プロ級のチェロ奏者でもある

森田 典正
1956年生まれ。早稲田大学大学院修士課程を経て、イギリス・ケント大学で博士号取得。現在、早稲田大学国際教養学術院教授(本データはこの書籍が刊行された当時に掲載されていたものです)

　さわやかな風の吹く見晴らしのよい高みに連れて行ってくれる魅力的な本だった。
　私たちの社会（この高度資本主義社会！）は愚かにも人々に「諦め」を学ばせるために「発達」してきてしまったようだ。セネットは、60年代のニューレフトの社会変革のアイディアを受けとめながら、彼らの見落としていた点を補完して新しい展望を示してくれている。
　著者の視点はそれほど目新しいものとは言えないだろう。だが、説得力がある。
　どんどん変化する社会の中で人々は荒波に翻弄されることを潔しとしていない。人々は精神的、感情的な「錨（いかり）」を欲している。言い換えれば人々は文化を求めているのである。その文化に結びつくものとして、筆者は物語性、有用性、職人性を取り上げて検討している。
　ともすれば自分を誤摩化しながら俯いて日々をやり過ごしてしまっている私たちに希望の在処を示してくれる。上を向いて社会変革の方向を見据えるための一冊。

講義内容を中心にまとめたものなので、細かな論証や具体例は少なく、抽象的な著述が中心。そのためやや読みづらく、座布団四枚。が、それでも本書は重要な視点をいくつも含んでいる。
80年代までの共同体型組織は自己変革され、職人気質から才能が重視される組織にシフトした。その中で帰属意識や長期的視野と言ったものが失われ、不安が台頭したのが今の社会だとする。そして筆者が最後に提案するのは、ベーシックインカムに代表される、新たな社会資本主義だ。

上記の流れは、90年以降の日本に置き換えてもそっくり通じるものだ。だが筆者が偉いのは、「昔は良かったね、だから昔に戻しましょうね」とは言わないこと。共同体の維持がもはや不可能だということはちゃんと理解しているのだ。それを踏まえたうえでの提言には素直に勉強させていただきたい。
「対策はわかんないけど、とりあえず反対ね」しか言えない日本のバカ左翼には、筆者の爪の垢でもせんじて飲ませたい。
