　時間旅行をする男と、その妻の愛を描く…と聞くと、SFかな、とかあり得ないロマンスものかと思うのですが、これが、とてつもなく素敵な愛の物語だったのです。

この物語ではタイムトラベルが「超能力」ではなく、「障害」として扱われています。
どの時代に、どの場所に行くのかコントロールできない時間旅行。
自分以外は移動できないので、いつも見知らぬ時代に裸で放り出されてしまうヘンリー。
そんな彼に子供の時に出会い、何度も何度も時間を共にしたクレア。

共にすごした「現在」は十五年あまり。
でも、彼女は生涯にわたってヘンリーの出現を待ち続けます。

別離の哀しみをテーマにした恋愛物語としては、初めて共感し、涙することができました。
読後しばらくこのお話が頭から離れません。
小川洋子さん絶賛と帯にありましたが、それも納得の良書でした。

もう5年前くらいにPaperbackで読んだ。原題は『Timetraveler's wife』
当時、この作品で衝撃を受けてしばらく他の作品は読めなかったくらい。
ちょっと翻訳の邦題がいただけない。なんとなく甘ったるい感じがする。装丁も女々しくて嫌だ。
確かに一種の恋愛小説ではあるが、悲劇的だし、決してロマンチックな話ではない。
題名と装丁を変えるだけで、倍は売れてもおかしくない。

過去や未来に行ってみたいと思う気持ちは誰にでも
あるけれど、でもね。。
自分の意志に反して飛ばされる中、
それでも、２人は出会って、共に生きて行く
ことになるのだが。。。。
はじめは少し混乱しますが、読んで行くうちに明らかに
なっていきます。
