フラメンコの音楽を聴き始めて半世紀を過ぎ当時の懐かしい演奏家の名前がしばしば登場し、それぞれのプレイヤーの演奏を思い浮かべながら読み進むうちに「デュエンデ」とはこの様にして感じ入るのかと新たにさせられた。「音楽」とかけ離れた意思表示の表現方法の一つとしてフラメンコがあると感じさせられた。訳者がスペイン音楽、歴史に精通していたらこの本の内容はどの様になっていたか。直訳と意訳の違いがあるかも。

デュエンデはロマ（ジプシー）のミューズというのだろうか、ま、芸術の神様みたいなものだ。

イギリス人で、インテリの著者が、デュエンデを求めて、フラメンコギタリストとしてスペインをさまよう。紀行文と成長物語と芸術小説がひとつになったような作品だ。

このなかに出てくるモントーヤ、サンルーカル、ペペ・アビチュエラ、パコ・デ・ルシアなどを聴きながら読んだ。いい小説だった。
