子供の時大好きだった本です。何度も立ち読みしていましたがついにまた買ってしまいました。ねしょんべんたれの男の子とじっさまの心温まるストーリーです。もちもちの木の実でつくおもち。いったいどれだけおいしいのか、いまだに想像力をかきたてられます。とにかく切り絵が美しい本。名作です。

この物語のいいところは、豆太がジサマを助けた後も、相変わらず甘えん坊のままで終わるところだ。
よくある児童絵本ならば、「それ以来、豆太は勇敢な男の子になった」というように、教訓的に終わるかもしれない。しかし、そういう結末は、子供をありのままに受け止める余裕のない大人の「身勝手な希望的結末」だとも言える。

真の自立には、依存が不可欠だ。河合隼雄氏がこのことを明快に論じておられるのを見つけた時、胸のすく思いがした。

「自立とは、実は、依存を排除したところにあるのではない。十分な依存の裏打ちがあってこそ、そこから真の自立が生まれ出てくる。
子供を甘やかすと自立しなくなる、と思う人もいるが、確かにこの時、親の方が自立していない場合は、子供の自立を妨げることになる。
親が自立的であり、かつ子供に依存を許すと、子供はそれを十分に味わった後は、勝手に自立する。」

豆太は、ジサマを助けた後も、弱虫で甘えん坊だった。そんな豆太を、ジサマは丸ごと受け止め、信じ、愛した。
だからこそ、豆太は、オトウやジサマのように、たくましく優しい若者に育ったに違いない！と思うのだ。 豆太は、村一番の勇敢な猟師になったかもしれない。
豆太は「本当の自立は依存に裏打ちされている」ということを、自分の体験から知っている。
だからこそ、豆太もまた智慧のある大人に成長したに違いない・・・と思うのだ。
子を育てる智慧とは、そうやって親から子へ、子から孫へ、理屈じゃなく、体験として受け継がれるものではなかったのか。

日野原重明先生は「子育てとは待つことだ」と言っておられた。
私は「信じる」とか「愛する」とかいうこともまた、「待つこと」であるような気がしてならない。
特に昨今、日本で忘れ去られようとしている「子育ての智慧」・・・それは即ち、「愛する」ということの智慧に他ならない。
「モチモチの木」には、実は、それほど大切なことが描かれているのだと思う。

弱虫豆太が主人公。でも、臆病な人間にも優しさがあれば、勇気はある。それも、自分のことそっちのけで。モチモチの木の幻想的な世界を通して、そのことがよく分かる絵本。この人の切り絵はホントに素晴らしい。内容の良さを際だてている。子どもにじっくり読み聞かせたい本。
