子どもの頃に読んだ時にも感動したけれど、大人になって読み返してみると、子どもの頃よりももっと深い感銘を受けました。
昔と捉え方が変わったことは、おそらく「自己犠牲」ということでしょう。
子どもの頃、私は重度の神経症でした。
両親に認めてもらえなかったため、「人に誉められること」が何よりも大事でした。「自己犠牲」ということに、「私はいい子だ」という、どこか歪んだ自己満足、ナルシズムを感じていたのだと思います。
でも今は違う。人は関係ない。それを、最近ようやく体感できるようになってきました。
「自己犠牲」は、実は「犠牲」なんかではなかった。
それは、ただ「自分の心に花を咲かせる」というだけのことでした。
「犠牲」というより、それはむしろ自分を本当の意味で愛し、大切に慈しむことなのだと思います。
そしてそれは、図らずも、他人の心にも花を咲かせることでした。
自分を真に愛することは、図らずも、他人をも真に愛することでした。

大人が読んでも、子どもが読んでも、何度読んでも、胸に熱く迫る。
滝平二郎氏の素晴らしい切り絵については、今更何も言うことはありません。
「モチモチの木」と共に、この絵本は心の宝。
こういう本を、まさしく「名作」というのでしょう。

　私は、この本を読んで「八郎」「三コ」へと斎藤隆介さんの世界へ踏み込んでいきました。
　一ついいことをすれば花が咲く。命を捧げれば山になる。という花さき山の記述から、一貫した世界観で書かれた「八郎」「三コ」を読まずに入られなくなったのです。

　現実のこの世界では、自分が、自分がというのが主流になっています。だからこそ、こういう話に惹かれるのだと思います。この本を読まれた方はぜひその先にも進んでください。世間の片隅で、生命を捧げることはできないけど、花ぐらい咲かせたいなと思っています。

5.0 out of 5 stars 読み聞かせると子供が静かに聞いてくれる絵本, 2005/9/1
ＮＨＫの番組でこの絵本を女優の渡辺えりこの朗読で聞いた。
あまりにも感動的だったので
本を見つけたときにはとても嬉しくて
すぐに開いた。
自分で読んでも本当に胸を打つ話である。

貧しいためにきょうだい全員の着物が新調出来ない。
姉は妹に新しい着物を譲る。
その優しい気持ちに花が咲く。
双子の兄は母親のおっぱいが弟に飲みつくされるのを
涙ながらに我慢する。
その涙に花が咲く。
優しい気持ちには何かの見返りがあるみたいな話である。
絵はどちらかというと大人向けだが
小学１年の息子は静かに聞いてくれる。
いい話は子供にもちゃんと伝わるんだと思える絵本である。
