　子供の頃に読んだ本で今でも好きなのが、コナン・ドイルの「赤毛同盟」と宮澤賢治の「注文の多い料理店」だ。
　なぜ好きなのか？
　よく考えてみると、この２つの話には共通点がある。つまり、自分の思いもよらない形で自分が利用されているって話なのだ２つとも。
　ご存知かもしれないが、「赤毛同盟」はすごく条件の良い求職話があって、それにはなぜか“赤毛の人のみ採用”って但し書きがある。主人公は不審に思いながらもその求職に応じ家を空けるのだが、実はその留守中に銀行の地下金庫への穴が日毎掘られてたんである。つまり悪党は最初から主人公を引っ掛けるために求職を仕掛けたワケだ。
　一方の「注文の多い料理店」は、店の奥に進むたびに、手を洗ってください、クリームを塗ってくださいと注文が書かれていて、やたら格式の高い料理店だな、と思っていたら、それはすべてその主人公自身をオイシクいただくための段取りだったってオチである。
　でもこの２冊は「だまされちゃいけない」ってなチンケな教訓話ではなくて、手のひらで踊らされることの“してやられたり！感”っていうか、世の中のそういうカラクリ自体の妙っていうか、そっちの話だと思う。少なくともこの２冊から、自分以外に“他者”ってのが存在してるらしいことを幼くして知ることが出来るだろう。

宮沢賢治の注文の多い料理店、私の好きな話の１つであるが、どうも和田誠の描く表紙の挿絵はいただけない。赤い服を着て、黒い毛皮の帽子とは、イギリスのバッキンガム宮殿の衛兵ではないか。たぶん話の中にある「二人の紳士がすっかりイギリスの兵隊の格好をして」からイメージした物らしいが、これは間違いだと思う。当時のイギリスの兵隊の格好とは、第一次世界大戦以降のイギリス兵の軍装のはずで、たぶんカーキ色のウールの狩猟服が正しい姿だと思う。赤いコートを着て黒い大きな毛皮の帽子を被って、山に狩りに行くわけないではないか。
