最近よく絵本でライオンをみかける。今年はライオンの当たり年なんだろうか。
さらに言うと、いわゆる百獣の王としての近寄りがたい存在ではなく、
もっと身近で親しみ易い存在として描かれているのが特徴的だ。
そんな中でも名作の予感がただようのが本書。

ある日、突然ライオンが図書館にやってくる。驚くみんなとは対象的に
平然とした館長の態度がいい。図書館のきまりさえ守れば問題ないとのことで
「そのままにしておきなさい」と言い放つ。

実際、この大きなライオンは行儀がいいのだ。子供達にまじってお話会に
夢中になる姿のなんと微笑ましいことか。それどころか、お手伝いまでやり始め、
図書館に必要な存在にまでなってしまうのは痛快だ。

世の中にはいろいろな力がある。では正しく力を使うとはどういうことか。
なんて考えさせられました。

併せてよむとおもしろいのは、「つばさをもらったライオン」
本を好きになった幼いライオンが登場します。

　良い本でも、途中が暗く悲しすぎる内容だと、２回目以降に読むときに、子供から避けられてしまいます。暗すぎず、優しさを教えてくれる内容で・・・と探していてこの本に出会いました。お値段は高いですが、そういった条件をそろえている本は少ないことから、十分満足しました。内容は４歳でもＯＫと思います。海外の和訳なので、漢字はありませんが、大変色合いがきれいでやさしい絵であることもポイント高いです。

図書館になぜか興味を持って毎日来るライオン、メリウェザー館長は
おおきな声を出さないなら来てもいい、と言います。
外見は猛獣そのものですが、行儀のいいライオンは、くもりのない目の子供達から
受け入れられ、いつの間にか当たり前のように、お手伝いまでするようになります。
この図書館では日常の風景になっていましたが、ある日決まりを破ってでも
しなければならない緊急事態がライオンに訪れるのです・・・・！
図書館のルールを学ばせる教訓本という、はんちゅうを軽々と越えヒューマンな
お話をライオンに語らせるあたりが、とても素敵です。約束を破ってでも
しなければいけないことって大人の世界でもたくさんあるような気がします。
