この絵本の詩は、韓国の人々のくらしがまだあまり豊かでなかった、1980年初めに書かれました。この絵本でヨンイがもっているビニール傘は、日本でよく見かけるビニール傘とはちがっています。傘の骨は細い木で、ビニールもとても薄く、すぐに破けてしまいそうなものでした。布製の傘を買えない貧しい子どもたちは、このビニール傘を使ったのです。絵本の中の少女ヨンイにとっても大切な傘だったことでしょう。少女ヨンイのやさしさと勇気、そして、おじいさんのヨンイへの思いが雨の日に静かにしみわたる韓国の傑作絵本。

７月に入って雨の日が続き、ついつい外に出るのがめんどうになってしまう。
そんなときに、ゆっくり家で絵本をよむなら、この作品はおすすめだ。

1980年に書かれた韓国の詩が元になっているとのこと。
単純に言ってしまえば、雨の日に道端にたたずむ物乞いへ、女の子が傘を
差し出すという話しだが、詩に絵がついたことで作品の完成度が100％に
なったと言ってもいいのではないでしょうか。

まず、表紙をみるだけでも画家の繊細さを伺い知ることができます。
一見すると大きな緑のビニール傘だけのようだが、
かすかに透けてみえる女の子の面影や、傘の先端から滴り落ちる雨、
ビニールの破れ目からのぞく黄色い服など、実に神経が細かい。

その繊細さは、絵の展開にも生かされており、絵本のカメラワークとも
いえる視点の変化が絶妙だ。第三者の視点から、女の子の視点へ、
そして、物乞いの視点へと変わっていく。

対象そのものを描くのではなく、雨水の映り込みを生かした暗示的な
描写が、かえって多くのことを伝えてくれる。
女の子や物乞いの表情も描かれていないが、読者は彼らの視点を共有すること
で、気持ちそのものを、見るのではなく感じ取れるようになっているのだ。

ボクはラストシーンで、物乞いの感謝の気持ちを感じとれました。

絵本としては緑のビニールがさの地味な表紙です。韓国の方の書いた本ということでとても繊細な感情が書き表されている叙情的な絵本だと思います。ぐっとくる本を読まれたい方には是非おすすめ。大人の方も考えさせられる内容です。理解できるかどうかは別として文章は少ないので小さい子でも読める本です。
