ALSの患者が人工呼吸器をつけることを選択するとはどういうことかということについて膨大な言説をまとめあげたもの。ALSの診断が下されたり、人工呼吸器をつけるか選択を迫れた際の、ALSの患者が受けた医師からの言葉や、患者の不安や苦痛が直の言葉で記録されている。そして患者のより望ましい自己決定の状況を求めて、患者自身が集まって行動を起こしたことが記されている。立岩は多くの直の言葉を土台にして「問い」を発するが、その答えを無理に導きだしたり押し付けたりせず、ただ問い続ける。ALSにおける人工呼吸器装着というものごとは極めて限られたものであるにも関わらず、問いをより深化させることでさまざまな問題に通底するものとなっている。診断することはできてもまだ有効な手立てのないALSという疾患、有効な手立てがないゆえに医療は患者の行く末を予想するにとどまっている、そういう状況に対面する患者、人工呼吸器という医療技術の介入、それらの狭間にて生きるALSの人々の直の声。科学的な病態生理に最も主点をおきやすい医師に対して「病をもつ人全体を診なければいけない」とよく言われるも、病をもつ人を知るための材料はあまりないのが現状であると思うが、この書物は「病をもつ人を知る」ということにとどまらず、病とか生とかが一体どういうものかという問いにまで及んでいる。分厚い書物なるも、直の声をそのまま書き写したものが多く、どれも存在感がある。

知人より教えてもらい購入しました。ALSの「闘病記」は数冊読んでおりましたが、
『ケアブック』等も読まなくては（購入して）と、思いながら過す日常生活で…。

各種、私が疑問に思っていた事の、答えが沢山のってます。
ただより一層、考えるべき問題点も…。
とにかく一度ご覧になって下さい。

528の引用がちりばめられた449pの本である。著者は、「中途半端な本」と自著を語る。そうかもしれない。しかし、引用された文章（短いものは一行に満たない）一つ一つが発せられた状況を浮かび上がらせる著者の紹介を手がかりに読み進むと、文章を書いた人々の日常が目に浮かんでくる。何となく息苦しそうだった、人工呼吸器を付けて生きることが、そんな風にも生きることができるんだ、と選択の範囲に入ってきた。
