ある事情で地球を飛び出してはるか遠くの星でふたりきりの生活を始めた若いカップル。しかし夫はすぐに事故で死亡し、ひとりぼっちになった妻は、冷凍睡眠で２０年眠り、成長した自分の息子と結ばれ…地球から遠く離れた星で子孫を増やして懸命に生きる女性、しかし心の中にはいつも地球への望郷の思いがあふれていて…

この作品はかなり昔に角川書店から出ているハードカバーの版で読んでいたのですが、そちらは１００ページほどカットされていて、セリフもかなり異なるものでした。
この朝日ソノラマ版では角川版でカットされたシーンすべてを読むことができ、下半身が１つで上半身が２つ（２人分）の宇宙人ノルヴァのエピソードなどを読むことができます。買ってよかったと思っています。

ある植民星に入植した若い夫婦。ジョーと ロミ。しかしその星は不毛の星で、ジョーは事故死してしまう。荒れ果てた星に一人取り残されたロミが選んだ、”生”への手段とは。
人間個人の生。種族としての、生命体としての”生”について問いかける、遠大なテーマを持つ作品。
あらゆる描写と表現に、想像を超えたイマジネーションの発露を感じる。必読。

最初から最後まで、涙なしには読めない。漫画にここまで人の心を打つ力を、どうして込めることができるのでしょうか。しかもこれは、２５年も前の作品だというのに。

私たちの日常はストレスが多く、ぎすぎすしてしまいがちで、ああ昔に戻りたい、いつの間に世の中はこうなったんだろう、自分たちの子どもはどうなっていくんだろう、と切実に思い、自分は無力でそれには逆らえないよと諦めたくもなります。

しかし２５年前にこの「望郷編」が生まれたということは、すでにその頃著者が私たちのもろさとか危うさとか、行く末といったものに心を痛め、でも善きものも失われることは絶対にないと希望を託していた証のように思います。そしてそれを読んで涙を流す時、自分はまだ大丈夫だとやはり希望を持つことができるのです。
