　人間に疎まれ、吸血鬼よりも優れた能力を持つといわれるダンピ―ルのはなし。ダンピ―ルとは、人間とそれを糧とする吸血貴族の胤｡中でも最も美しく強いといわれたバンパイアハンターD。その身に貴族の血を流していながらバンパイアを狩るもの｡この青年はいったいなにを求めて旅をしているのでしょうか。それは話を読むうちにわかってくると思います。

　物語が一つ終わるたびになんだか切なくなります｡この青年の生き方に悲壮な影が見え隠れするから。Dの”ダンピ―ルは人間としては生きられない“という言葉は、彼の今までの経験がいわせたのでしょうか｡それを思うと涙が出そうになりました｡

もう説明する必要もないくらい有名な「吸血鬼ハンターD」シリーズ第1作。

吸血鬼＝過去~現代、というのが定番ですが、時代設定を1万年も未来にするなど、大胆な設定が魅力的でさえあります。

そして吸血鬼と人間の混血で、男も惚れてしまいそうな翳りのある美貌を持つ主人公D。

最近のシリーズでは文章がかなり洗練（というか短い？）されてきていますが、私はこの当時の文体が好きです。今でもたまに読み返したりします。

シリーズを重ねるごとに謎が解かれ、新たな謎が追加され…もはや作者・菊地秀行さんのライフワークと言ってよい作品でしょう。

吸血鬼というと中世のヨーロッパを思い浮かべる方がほとんどであろう。が、これは違う。近未来に吸血鬼が勢力を広げ、人との戦いの末、吸血鬼、貴族の世の中となる。ほとんど死なないので、いろいろな研究が進み、強力な武器、遺伝子操作による怪物、異次元を超える装置やそれらを備えた城、棺を運ぶ装甲車などが発明される。人々はそれでも生き残り、多くの貴族も滅んだ数万年未来の世界が物語の舞台となる。人は都や各地の辺境地に住み、貴族はそれぞれの領地で暮らしている。が、時に辺境の村に生贄を求めてやってくる。そしてその貴族を倒すために雇われるのが吸血鬼ハンターである。そしてＤは、その美貌、腕の確かさで有名なのだが、その秘密は彼が貴族と人の混血ダンピールだからである。各地での貴!族と人、Ｄとの戦いは壮絶を極めるが、これが菊地氏の腕により、臨場感あふれるタッチで描かれる。シリーズ化され、読み進むうちにＤの秘密が解き明かされていくのも楽しみな作品である。
