自然を尊敬し大切にする。自分に厳しく、他人に優しく。助け合って生きる。
日本人だけではなく、他民族へのいたわりの気持ちをも自然と持てるように。

日本の歴史を知り尽くし、国民作家として膨大な作品を残した作家が、
最後にこれからの日本を担っていく子供たちに残したメッセージ。
自然破壊が進み、道徳心も優しい気持ちも薄れてきている今の状況を知っていながらも、
「僕は君たちを信じているよ。君たちならきっと出来る。現に少しずつ良くなってきているではないか。」と、
読んだ人間に明るい希望を持たせ、その気にさせる。さすが司馬遼太郎。

5年生のわが息子には少し難しかったようですが、
「司馬さんの期待に応えられるようにがんばります。」で結んだ
なかなか良い感想文を書いていました。
司馬さんの気持ちはちゃんと伝わっています。

司馬さんの記念館を訪問した時、「21世紀に生きる君たちへ」の碑を拝見して、胸に感動がこみ上げてきました。本の中で、「もし、未来という町角で、私が君たちを呼び止めることができたら、どんなにいいだろう。」と、司馬さんは、まるで歴史の登場人物のように語られています。そして、「自然」と「人間」。「生きる」ということを、やさしく語られています。僕は、この本を高校生の娘にプレゼントしました。それは、親としての自分を見つめながら、子どもに語り継いでいかねればならないことが、この書に記されているような気がしたからです。司馬さんのようにうまく伝えきれないのですが、きっと司馬さんと同じ気持ちを、僕も感じているんだと思います。幸い英語の対訳がありましから、娘も喜んでいました。

子ども向けの平易な文章で書かれていますが、司馬さんの思いが、ひしひしと伝わってくるようで、何度も読み返しました。今、子どもたちに必要なのは、強い意志を持って、正しい道を指し示すことのできる大人ではないかと思いました。是非、子どもさんと一緒に読んでみてください。
