寓話を紡ぐという行為は、作家にとって危険な刃である。
どれだけ荒唐無稽な作り話でも、
そこでは生き生きとした生命を与えられる一方、
その作家の物語性そのものが、衣服によって隠しようなく、
直に晒されてしまうからだ。

そういった意味でこの『奇跡の島』という作品も
危険な小説のひとつである。
「家族」や「血」に縛られたこの作家の物語性は

生命そのものが輪廻というメビウスの輪の中で
美しく昇華されてしまう南海の楽園では、
ただの執着と化してしまう危険性を孕んでいるからだ。

そう、残念ながら美しい写真によって彩られたこの物語は
鷺沢萠という作家の根本を否定する方向に働く。
主人公の自己犠牲も、秘めた想いも、
カリブ海のカラフルな風土の前では

世俗の色褪せた執着にしか見えない。

唯ひとつ、この物語を有効に成り立たせているのは、
「ホセ」という現地人の存在である。
まるでカリブ海のように全てを「神さまの決めたこと」と飲み込む彼のスタンスは
この小説の題名、『奇跡の島』の体現者のように見える。
