死刑制度存置派の人よりも，廃止派の人よりも，何より「死刑」について深く考えたことのない人に読んで欲しい。
僕もその一人です。著者の森達也さんもその一人。そして森さんは三年をかけて色々な人に会う。死刑囚，元刑務官，弁護士，被害者遺族，存置派，廃止派・・・。
人間だから，いや人間だからこそそれぞれに考えが違う。そして森さんも悩む。
その悩みや揺れ動きが森さんらしく素直に表現されている本です。

この本を読んだからといってすぐに「廃止」や「存置」という結論は出ないと思います。
でも「死刑制度」は日本の主権者である僕らが「支持」しているから続いています。
この制度をこれからどうしていくか？少なくともその答えのきっかけがこの本にはあると思います。

細かい心理描写で、著者の心の揺れ動きに触れることが伝わってくる。
死刑の是非を考え抜こうとする姿勢に、読者も同じ経験をしているかのような、そんな錯覚をおぼえた。

死刑は、極刑としてあった方がいいと漠然と思っていたけど、死刑の是非を問う以前、あまりに無知だったことに愕然としている。
簡単なことではないので、もっともっと考えるべき問題。

私もここ数年ずっと死刑制度について考えていて、存置なのか廃止なのか自分が納得出来る答を出したいと、読んで、聞いて、調べて、ずっと探しているけどまだきちんとした答には辿り着けずにいます。死刑の森は本当に暗くて奥深い。この本を読んでもまだ心は決まりません。でも一人一人が(死刑問題に限らず)きちんと自分の頭や心で考え、他者の痛みを想像する事が今(だけではないのかもしれませんが)の世の中には少し欠けていて大切な事なのだと思います。被害者遺族の方の「存置派も廃止派も良い社会への願いは一緒で同じ頂上を別のルートで目指しているだけだと思う」という言葉には強く心を揺さぶられ、その事件や彼の苦悩を思い涙が出ました。
