いくつか購入した狂牛病関連書籍の中でもっとも興味深く読めたのがこれだ。しかも、怖い。専門書系の書籍だからか、結構驚くような事実が淡々と述べられている。
：例：プリオン病はダニ経由でも感染しうる

難しい専門知識はあまり必要とは思えず、また丁寧な語り口も手伝って、同書は（おそらく最先端の）狂牛病研究成果を素人が短時間に把握するには最適であろう。

初心者にプリオンタンパク質の本を薦めるなら立石先生の『プリオンとプリオン病』だと思っていましたが、先日読み返してみるとなかなか良い本だと思い直しました（小野寺先生ゴメンナサイ）。

2001年に出版された本書ですが、流れが早い分子生物学の世界では、すでに別の説があがっていたりとそのまま信じることは出来ない部分もあるのですが、それでもプリオンにまつわる生物学に流れる底辺知識をざっとながめるのにはちょうど良いです。立石先生の本までいかなくても参考文献の紹介がされているのも好感が持てます。個人的には、プリオン遺伝子の変異に関してアミノ酸レベルではなく、コドンレベルでの記述がなされている点を☆5つの根拠にしました。コドンの最初の文字、AspのGACならばAに置換が入りAACのAsnになる例とコドンの二文字目に置換が入る例があり、最初の文字の置換のし易さと二文字目の置換のし難さを考える時、構造上のどういう領域にそれらが分布しているのかを眺めていろいろと妄想するだけでも楽しいかも？
