左腕を伊良子に切り落とされ、悶絶した藤木が一瞬だけ息を吹き返し、その目に見た光景は、信頼する虎眼流の兄弟子が助太刀で返り討ちにあい、無残に顔面を切り裂かれ崩れ落ちるシーンである。

彼らは勝負をする以上、必ず、勝者の前に敗者がいる。そして徹底的に敗者は惨めである。
本書では敗者となった藤木が、気を失い骸に埋もれながら右手の長刀を立てたままにしている姿が象徴的である。
一言であらわすと、「無念」なのだろう。

しかし、虎眼流に追放され辛酸をなめ続けた伊良子もまた「無念」の中で再生した。
無念と怨嗟が連鎖し、しかし、その連鎖の中に自ら身を投じようとする彼らの動機は、報復のみである。そして、報復のみに自らを追い立てる彼らの姿は美しく、読むものをひきつけて離さないのだ。

その後の清玄の修行振りを描いた冒頭の回想シーンがよい。甲斐甲斐しく清玄の世話をするいくの姿が印象的。（いわば姉さん女房と云ったところですが、自らの肉体を惜しげもなく清玄に与える姿が、その全裸の後姿幾葉かと共に艶かしい。）

食事の前に箸で 「 いく 」 の乳首にいたずらする清玄や、
清玄の右目にやたらメリこむ小豆に吹いたのも束の間、
VS 牛股権左衛門クライマックスを経て仇討編完結。
烏が飛び交う曇天の下に異形と向き合う様を描いた登場人物の精神世界には目を奪われる。

「 ふく 」 は (9) で牛股に切られたと語られていたように読めたが、
牛股ではない誰かと、その間の子らしきを連れて、牛股の最期に悲哀の色を添えるべく最登場。
そこで 「 ふく 」 は、尋常ではない力で両断されたと見える大きな桜の切り株を優しく撫でている。
これが現実なのだとしたら、つまり牛股は 「 ふく 」 をその手をかけることができず、
素手による去勢を果たそうとも、最期まで 「 赤い縄に繋がれし牛 」 であったということになる。

そして牛は鬼となって蘇り、雷に震える竜に襲い掛かる … とにかく本巻は牛股に刮目せよ !!
