　２００５年の現在に、こんな本がまだ新刊で入手できるなんて…！。昭和４０~５０年代にかけて子どもだった人には、懐かしい世界です。駄菓子のようなチープ感漂うイラスト、実にナゲヤリかつイイカゲンな文章、どこからかテキトーに持ってきたような写真…(しかもついてる説明文デタラメ。)奥付見たらなんと初版、昭和５５年２月２５日！それから版を重ねて１４版！簡単に本を絶版にしない秋田書店…。その本のなかにあっても凄すぎます。隠れたロングセラーだったんですね。

　皆さんご指摘の通り、立風書房の名著に比べればイラストの迫力が落ちるのは事実。「ドラキュラ」「バーニィ」の絵が講談社ドラゴンブックス『吸血鬼百科』からの流用、日本妖怪は殆どが黒崎出版の『妖怪大図鑑』から流用。佐藤先生にとっては片手間モードだったか？　しかし、この本のみでしか紹介されていない「墓あらし」「ガイコツ魔人」「片目男」「猫男」「ハエ男」「魔鳥マイ」「牛鬼ボコラ」「死神ガイコツ（←『吸血鬼百科』には吸血ガイコツってのがあったが）」などが登場するので油断はできない。また、他の本では一切触れていない『西遊記』の妖怪がやたら登場。なんでかね？　他はというと何年たっても同じような妖怪ばかり紹介しているが、微妙に違う部分があったりで、職人芸の域に達してしまっている。メジャーな妖怪である「キマイラ」「テュポン」「コボルト」などが全然紹介されないのに、「どくろ天使」「半女半男人」などは日本の30〜40代にのみ抜群の知名度を誇るんじゃねえかな。奇妙な世界妖怪群に乾杯！

　同著者の旧著『日本妖怪図鑑』『世界妖怪図鑑』（共に立風書房）がカラー図版や写真の多い、大変な名著であったのでかなり期待していたのですが、届いた本の中身を見てみてガッカリ。まずサイズが小さくなったのは文庫版シリーズの一冊であるので仕方ないにしても、９割が白黒ページになり、旧著にあった写真も大幅に削減。特に東西の古文書や絵画からの引用図版が減ったのは非常に残念。イラストも石原豪人氏の迫力あるものから下手くそでチープなものに差し替えられている。著作権の問題があったのだろうか？
　立風書房版が入手困難な現在では本書が旧著を偲ぶ唯一の手段かも知れないが、その内容の充実度には天地の差がある事を心していて欲しい。
