表紙には防災頭巾をかぶった女の子が描かれています。ふくらんだ頬と赤ん坊の名残を感じさせる口元、何か言いたげな目は私の方を見つめています。女の子は「ちいちゃん」です。戦争のさなか、ひとりぼっちになった「ちいちゃん」は、じっとこらえて家族と会える時を待っています。

タイトルの「かげおくり」はお父さんが家族みんなに教えてくれた遊びです。青い空はかげおくりが出来る日です。よちよち歩きをしてもおかしくない「ちいちゃん」は、今度は一人でかげおくりをします。淡い色で描かれた子どもの姿は、頼りなくいじらしく、我が子の幼き日と重ね合わせ涙がこぼれて止まりませんでした。

戦争とは自分の親や友達の身体がちぎれ、目の前で死んでいくことだ。私の恩師の言葉は、私達が実際に出会う戦争の本当の姿なのでしょう。表紙の「ちいちゃん」は何も語りません。しかし、語らない、語れない多くの命が犠牲になったことを私は忘れられません。切なく胸がつまる物語ですが、ストレートなメッセージに心打たれました。

この物語は何回読んでも涙が出てしまいます。
戦争により小さい命が消えていく物語ですが、
何回も読むともうこの世にはいないお父さんとお母さんが
空襲で逃れるとき、家族を捜し家へ帰るとき
誰かの手を借りて、ちいちゃんを守ろうとしてるように感じます。
死してなお我が子を守ろうとするかごとく
でも、まだ小さいちいちゃんはそのことが分からずに
一人で家族の帰りを待つことを選んでしまう...
今、思い出しただけで泣きそう...
子どもをもつ親にはちょっとつらすぎです。

平和である今、日常で戦争が話題になることはありません。
それぞれ登場人物の懸命に生きてる姿がとてもよく描かれています。
読み終えたら、戦争がなんて悲しいことなのかを伝えるキッカケになる一冊です。

かげおくり、、、ひさしぶりにやってみたくなります。
