タイトルのとおり、麻生氏による吉田茂のエピソード集である。身内でないと知らないような吉田茂の豪快なエピソードがおもしろかった。
庶民離れしていると批判される麻生氏だが、吉田茂の財力をバックとした豪快さを麻生政治の原点としていると考えると、妙に納得してしまった。
後半の３分の１は、麻生氏の講演内容だが、全文を見ると割とまともな話になっており、麻生総理の目指す日本が見えるような気がした。

やはり、高名な政治家が書いたものなので、最初は少し構えて読んでしまうのですが、
しばらく読み進めていくとすぐにやばいぐらい面白いことに気付いて愕然とします。
これほど、無抵抗に頭にはいってくる文章も珍しい。
付録の部分は、「とてつもない日本」にほぼ含まれる内容でがっかりですが、本篇である
内閣総理大臣でもあった作者の祖父吉田茂にまつわるエピソードの数々は、血の通った温
もりのあるユーモアにあふれた文章になっています。
例えば、インドの首相が自分の娘の名前をつけた象を日本に贈答してくれたお返しに、日
本からクマを贈ろうという話になり、「祖父は『クマの名前はカズコにしよう』と母をか
らかっていた」というエピソードなど。どの家庭でもありそうな言い草であるがゆえに、
そう思えるのかもしれません。
吉田茂その人自身がユーモラスであっただけでなく、麻生太郎氏自身も相当に諧謔を解し
弄する人なのだろうとうかがわれます。「『避雷針』になってくれた外務次官」という文
章で「しかし、正直なところ、子ども心にも『避雷針にはなりたくないなあ』と思ったも
のである」と締めくくるのですが２ページに満たない文章ながらどうにも心憎い。
何らかのきっかけで少しでも興味をもったのなら、是非一読の価値があると思います。

　「ローゼン閣下」など、さまざまな異名を持つ麻生氏。その一つに「半径２メートルの男」がある。要するに麻生氏に会ったらその虜になってしまうほど魅力的だということだが、そんな麻生氏を育んだのは昭和の大宰相・吉田茂であった。
　本書には人間味溢れた吉田茂のエピーソードが満載されているが、「バカヤロウ解散」のイメージしか持っていなかった私にとってはとても新鮮だった。
　付録として掲載されている麻生氏の演説・評論集なども読み応えがあり、総裁選を単なる人気投票にしてしまった自民党のセンセー方にもぜひ読んで欲しい一冊である。
