自信家で短気な「とんがりトビ子」。「はみ出すのが当然だ。はみ出さないほうが、おかしい。あたしは大物なんだから」と１８歳で家出をし、初恋を経験し、だがその相手に諭されて家に戻る。大学を出て一般社会人としてそつなく生きてはみたものの、またその思い人を追いかけて温泉街移り住む。

あとがきによると本書は、著者が２５歳で書いた初めての小説・トビ子の初恋物語（公募新人賞の最終候補に残る）と、二作目の温泉街ストリッパー・マリアさんの物語をベースに、その後のトビ子の顛末を加えて長編小説に仕立て直したものなのだそうです。つまり、２５歳の著者と５０歳を過ぎた著者のコラボ小説とのこと。「あえて若書きのまま、本にしていただきました」とあるとおり、そのコラボは必ずしもうまくいっているとは言えず、ぎくしゃくした感じがします。その気になればまとまりのある物語に仕上げられるはずなのに、若書きトビ子のままで世に出したところに初めての小説への愛着を感じさせます。大胆だな、勇気があるなとも思います。そして、きっとトビ子は著者そのものに違いない、と想像してしまうのでした。

全体的に古めかしさというか、なつかしさを感じさせる小説。うらぶれた温泉街が舞台ですし、全共闘のエピソードが出てきたりしますがそのせいばかりではなくて、２５年以上前の著者の筆づかいがそのまま残されていることがなつかしさを醸しているのだろうなとわたしは思いました。

自信家で短気で周りよりも自分の思いを優先するトビ子。
しかし、18歳で家出をして出会った男に惚れてしまう。
つまり、初恋。
その男に諭されて家に戻るも、
結局はその男を追って、男の姉の住む温泉街へ。
そこでラーメン屋でアルバイトし、
エッセイで賞を取り、
ストリッパーの一代記を書こうとし、
ようやく男に出会っても、
ストリップ小屋の女主人の窮地のために男の元を去り、
そんなトビ子の数年間。

いや、激しい性格の持ち主の主人公、トビ子にこっちも振り回されます。
でも一途に一人の男を待つ姿も健気です。

ちょっと古臭い作品でもあるんだけど、
後書きを読めばそれも納得。
なかなか珍しい書き方だなぁ〜と思いました。
