仕事に行き詰まり、親の要望もあり郷里に帰った男。娘は新しい学校でいじめにあい、妻はアメリカに短期留学。故郷には忘れたはずの｢高校野球｣があった。

｢逃げても良いんだよ｣その言葉がとてつもなく優しく聞こえる。それでも男は一つの決断をせざるを得ない。小学生の娘が小賢しくて可愛い。

昔は毎年１回戦敗退するような野球部でも、｢伝統｣があり、実に頑張っていたなと思う。まだサッカーは人に認知されず、野球だけが大きな夢に向って開いていた。負けつづけた野球部をずっと戦後からネット裏で応援しつづけていた｢ザワ爺」のために読まれた弔辞が、涙をさそう。「ザワ爺」の中に高校野球の真髄があった。

重松清は僕と同世代の作家だ。家族人情ものを書かせたら随一。ほんと泣ける。でも山本周五郎的人情ものではなくて、そこは現代の作家。現代の残酷さも描きだした上で、「それでも、なお」という形での家族の情愛を描く。

重松清は割と短編を得意とする。本当に短編上手だと思う。ところがこの「熱球」は332ページの長編。これがまたいい。昔と今、合理主義と精神主義、田舎と都会、人情味と噂話好き、勝ちと負け、父（ヨージ）と娘（美奈子）、父と息子（ヨージ）、ヨージ（夫）と和美（妻）、嫁（和美）と姑（ヨージの母）、正雄叔父（ヨージの母の弟）と和美、父と和美、恭子（野球部マネージャー）とオサム（野球部員）、恭子とヨージ、恭子と甲太（恭子の息子）、甲太と美奈子、ヨージと甲太、ザワ爺とＯＢ会、ＯＢ会と現代っ子部員総会、雪の日の練習と楽しい高校野球、昔の周防と製造業が海外へ逃げていった今の周防・・・。そういった二項対立の重畳的連鎖とずれの手法で、人間の性（さが）と情とを非常に丁寧に描いている。これは長編ならではできることだと思う。

ただ丁寧に描いている分、胸にストレートで入ってこず、いつもの短編の時のようには泣けなかった。重松清を読めばすがすがしい涙を流せると期待している部分はあるのだけれど。

高校時代に運動部の経験がある３０−４０代の読者であれば、ヨージに自分の姿を重ねてしまうのではないか。高校時代は、たとえスピードが無くても直球勝負だった。仲間とも一つのことを目指すことが出来た。高校を卒業して２０年も経つと、仲間にはそれぞれ違う暮らしがあり、背負っているものも違う。大人になっても負けることはある。いや、ほとんど負けているのかもしれない。それでも帰る「ふるさと」がある人は幸せだ。仲間は「よく頑張った」と言ってくれるだろう。人生の中間地点で出会って良かった本である。
